—A Sam and Bailey Mystery

IN THE SUMMER OF 1992, tech billionaire Brandt Keener dies drinking a glass of wine while dining with his nearest if not dearest on his small private island off the Washington coast. Despite suspicious circumstances and an abundance of motives, the police find no evidence of homicide, and three weeks later the same people who were present at his death gather again for the reading of his will. Convinced the man was murdered, time-travelers Sam and Bailey inveigle themselves onto the island to investigate, but soon their best suspects start dying…

Say what?

So I'm reading this complex time travel saga, and we're in the middle of all kinds of things happening, and it's fairly interesting, and all of a sudden this book appears.

It seems to have virtually nothing to do with what the first two books covered, except for the bare premise that some of the characters involved are time travelers from the future. And Time Travel has almost nothing to do with what is essentially a murder mystery book.

Standing by itself, it's an ok mystery book, but I am not kidding when I say that a few pages in I had to go back to the beginning and check that I was in fact reading book 3 of this series, and not some other mystery book that I accidentally downloaded.

Uncertain Murder Watchbearers Book 3 edition by James Litherland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I would like to thank the author, James Litherland, for giving me a copy of Uncertain Murder to review. As the third installment in the Watchbearer series, this book highlights two lesser known characters from the previous books. Sam and Bailey team up to help solve the mystery surrounding the death of tech billionaire Brandt Keener. Turner makes an appearance as Keener's right hand man, although he is living under an assumed name. With a little mystery and a little mayhem, Uncertain Murder promises to captivate you at every turn. Reminiscent of an old fashioned "whodunit", James Litherland updates it with science fiction touches. The mystery deepens and the plot unfolds, leading to an ending that I did not see coming. Brilliant detective work and savvy undercover tactics break the case wide open. Although I did miss my favorite characters from the previous books, it was time to find out what happened to the rest of the Travelers. I would recommend Uncertain Murder to those who have read the previous two books because little nuances might be lost if you read them out of order. It is my sincere hope that there are more books to come in the Watchbearer series, as the possibilities are endless for the Travelers in both the future and the past.
Uncertain Murder by James Litherland is a stunning and most captivating mystery of them all. His writing lures readers deep into the mystery of one man's death. A death that was ruled out as a crime. However there are two that believe it was. These two characters are just intriguing as the plot. They are time travelers who are investigating into a man's death. Apparently everyone that was there for the man's death happens to be mentioned in his will. But as these people are being murdered the time travelers will have to race and figure who the killer is before it's too late for them as well.

Uncertain Murder indeed fits in with the novel's theme and surrounds readers with uncertainty as a killer is loose and people die. Is it revenge or is it someone eliminating others? A fast-paced story that will keep readers guessing until the end. James Litherland has created a fascinating world with characters that bring unknown possibilities to readers' minds. A mystery so beautifully put together, readers will be looking for the next book inside this new series by James. For those love suspense, murder, and a novel with paranormal twists, this is the book for you. I highly recommend this novel to readers everywhere. James Litherland's writing is a talent most writers wished they had. Overall, I rate Uncertain Murder a five out of five stars.
This novel is the third in a series but states that it can be read as a stand-alone. However, because I had not read the previous books in the series, I found myself initially disoriented by the premise of time travelling investigators. Some backstory about main characters, Sam and Bailey, would have helped to clarify who they were and why they were on the island. Having said that, I liked the idea of listing the cast of characters at the beginning and the plot moved along at a good pace with an unexpected twist at the end. This novel is a quick read for fans of whodunnits.
An absorbing mystery involving the absolutely classic scenario of a house party of the idle rich with their servants and hangers-on -- isolated on a private island, no less. I love that! There is a bizarre vindictive will and a falling chandelier. Also we have that wonderful Wodehousean device of imposters in the house. Except that some of the imposters are time travellers. That adds just the right crazy touch to the familiar scene.

I kept thinking that perhaps something important in August 1992 had brought the travellers here, but it was perhaps just a whim or the pull of a long-ago unsolved crime, or some greater whirling in the cosmos. I was ok with that uncertainty, but intrigued to follow their story beyond this book.

If you too like the private island type of mystery, I recommend Mister Mottley and the Dying Fall, another enjoyable puzzle with great characters.
🔍 I enjoyed the bulk of this novel and its plentiful cast of suspect killers. It's a murder mystery with an isolated island and two deadly weekend parties with characters dropping right and left and reminded me a bit of Christie's And Then There Were None in trope. But there are less deaths here AND time travelers arrive and do the bulk of the investigating and looking for the murderer with about a dozen suspects to choose from.

I had no idea who the murderer was until the big reveal near the end. Either I am just oblivious to clues or the author did not leave enough for me to follow! So, the suspense of the string of murders and the potential for more kept me interested throughout.

The author added extra suspense through the time travelling Samantha and Bailey, who had to maneuver through the house and investigate without tipping off anyone that they had no real identity in that time period! I found this angle added to the story until the very end. The epilogue is peppered with references to other eras and fellow time travelers who have nothing to do with this murder mystery. So, I would say you can read this as a standalone story if you are ready to ignore the epilogue!I

I received a complimentary advance copy of this book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
